🚨Patna Forms 19 Rapid-Action Teams to Fight Urban Flooding

RR Team, June 9, 2025

Patna Takes Swift Action Against Urban Flooding With 19 QRTs

In a bold and much-needed move to address Patna’s persistent monsoon woes, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched 19 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to combat waterlogging across the city. This strategic step comes just before the peak of the rainy season and aims to drastically reduce water stagnation in residential and commercial areas.

🚛 What Are These QRTs?

Each QRT is assigned to one of the 19 zones into which PMC has divided the city’s 75 wards. These teams are equipped with vehicles, portable pumps, and water-drainage equipment to ensure quick, on-ground response to flooding and drainage blockages.

“Our goal is to reach any reported site within 15 minutes,” said a PMC official.

This proactive move stems from repeated public outcry and urban infrastructure failures during previous monsoons, where many parts of Patna remained submerged for hours — in some cases, even days.

📞 New Helpline Launched: 155304

PMC has also unveiled a dedicated helpline number (155304) where residents can report waterlogging complaints directly. According to officials, this line will remain active throughout the monsoon season and will be monitored in real-time from a central command center.

For added accountability, complaint resolution times and actions taken will be documented digitally, which may also feed into future smart city planning initiatives.

⛈ Why This Was Urgently Needed

Patna’s topography and overburdened sewage systems have long made it prone to monsoon-induced flooding. Areas like Rajendra Nagar, Kankarbagh, and Pataliputra frequently make headlines due to ankle- or knee-deep water during heavy rains. In 2019 and 2021, flood-like conditions disrupted transport, hospital access, and even school schedules.

PMC’s QRT initiative reflects an understanding that mitigation must be immediate, not reactive.

👷 How This Fits Into Larger Urban Reforms

The QRT rollout is part of a broader PMC initiative that includes:

Ongoing desilting of drains across city zones

Installation of real-time water level monitoring sensors

Planned collaboration with NDRF and SDRF units for emergencies

Possible integration with the Smart Patna mobile app for live tracking

“Urban flooding is no longer a seasonal issue—it’s an urban governance challenge,” said urban planner Dr. S. Kumar from NIT Patna.

🧠 Bottom Line: Prevention Over Cure

Patna’s QRT initiative is more than just a flood-fighting measure—it’s a citizen-first approach to urban governance. While it’s early to assess long-term results, the intent and planning mark a shift toward preventive infrastructure solutions.

✅ What Can Residents Do?

Save the helpline number: 155304

Report flooding immediately with ward and landmark details

Follow PMC updates on social media for real-time alerts

As monsoon clouds gather, Patna’s residents may

finally have a reason to feel hopeful, thanks to a system designed not just to wait, but to act.
