10 Indian Army Soldiers Killed in Doda Gorge Accident in J&K

At least ten Indian Army soldiers lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a military vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday, officials confirmed. The tragic accident occurred at Khanni Top along the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road, a high-altitude and accident-prone stretch in the hilly region.
The vehicle, reportedly a bullet-proof Army carrier, was on its way to a forward post when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the narrow road and fall nearly 200 feet into the gorge. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by security personnel deployed in challenging mountainous terrain.

Immediate Rescue Operation Launched

Following the accident, a joint rescue operation involving the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and local authorities was launched without delay. Rescue teams descended into the gorge amid difficult weather and terrain to retrieve the injured and recover the bodies of the deceased soldiers.

Initial reports indicated that several soldiers were critically injured. Helicopters were pressed into service to airlift the injured personnel to military hospitals for advanced medical care. Some of the injured were shifted to Udhampur for specialised treatment.

Lieutenant Governor Expresses Grief

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He said the nation would always remember the bravery and service of the soldiers who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.

The Lieutenant Governor also directed senior officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured soldiers and assured full support to the bereaved families during this difficult time.

Recurring Risks on Mountain Roads

The accident in Doda is the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving security forces in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Narrow roads, sharp turns, unpredictable weather, and steep cliffs make movement in these areas extremely risky, especially during winter months.

Earlier this month, two Army porters lost their lives after slipping into a gorge near the Line of Control in the Gulmarg sector. In previous years as well, several soldiers have died in similar road accidents across Ramban, Kishtwar, and other hilly districts.

Nation Pays Tribute to Fallen Soldiers

Messages of condolence poured in from across the country as news of the accident spread. Citizens, veterans, and political leaders expressed solidarity with the families of the deceased soldiers, acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by the armed forces in safeguarding the nation.

The Indian Army has initiated an internal review to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Officials stated that further details would be shared after a thorough assessment of the incident.
