Pan-India Celebrations and Support Services
The day will be marked across the country at 34 Rajya Sainik Boards in States and Union Territories and 434 Zila Sainik Boards. Events include veterans’ rallies, grievance redressal counters, and facilitation help desks through SPARSH (System for Pension Administration – Raksha), the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and Record Offices of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Employment agencies, defence and government welfare organisations, and banks will also set up stalls to provide guidance and support for veterans and their families.
Honouring Field Marshal KM Cariappa’s Legacy
Defence Forces Veterans’ Day commemorates the retirement of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, who retired on this day in 1953. Field Marshal Cariappa led India’s forces to victory in the 1947 war and established a legacy of discipline, service, and patriotism.
The day strengthens the bond among serving personnel, veterans, and citizens, reaffirming the nation’s gratitude towards those who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding the country.
Initiatives for Veterans’ Welfare
During the events, veterans will have access to grievance redressal mechanisms, pension-related assistance, and health services through ECHS. The government and allied organisations will provide employment guidance, banking services, and welfare support to ensure the well-being of veterans and their dependents.
Nationwide Outreach and Civic Participation
The Defence Forces Veterans’ Day is observed to cultivate public appreciation of the sacrifices made by armed forces personnel. Across India, citizens, officials, and organisations participate in rallies, seminars, and outreach programmes, highlighting the importance of honouring military service and encouraging active engagement with veterans’ issues.
