Hindu Priest

2 Hindu Priest Arrested in Bangladesh as Protests Erupt, Says ISKCON Member

RR Team, November 30, 2024November 30, 2024

In a disturbing development in Bangladesh, Shyam Das Prabhu, a Hindu priest from Chattogram, was arrested on Saturday, just days after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das. Prabhu, who had gone to visit Das in jail, was detained without an official warrant, sources reported. This arrest follows a troubling trend where authorities have been detaining individuals without formal charges, only to release them later.

ISKCON’s Response to the Arrest

Radharamn Das, Vice-President of ISKCON Kolkata, shared news of the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), saying that another Brahmachari, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was arrested by Chattogram Police today. This marks the second arrest of a Hindu priest linked to the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in just a few days.

Unrest in Bangladesh: Hindu Community Protests

The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das earlier this week sparked protests across Bangladesh, particularly in the cities of Dhaka and Chattogram. Das, a former member of ISKCON Bangladesh, was arrested on charges of sedition, which triggered widespread protests by the Hindu community.

These protests turned violent when clashes broke out between police and demonstrators, demanding Das’s release. Tragically, Assistant Public Prosecutor Saiful Islam was killed during the unrest. Police have since arrested nine individuals in connection with his death.

Temples Vandalized in Chattogram

As protests escalated, tensions also led to violent attacks on Hindu temples. On Friday, a mob targeted three temples in Chattogram, including the Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, the Shoni Temple, and the Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple. The attackers, numbering in the hundreds, threw bricks at the temples, causing damage to structures and gates.

Kotwali Police Station chief, Abdul Karim, confirmed the attack, stating that the assailants had tried to destroy the temples. The vandalism highlights the rising hostility against minority communities in the country.

Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh

The recent violence against the Hindu community is part of a larger pattern of increasing violence against minorities in Bangladesh. Since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country has seen growing unrest. The interim government, led by Mohammed Yunus, has faced criticism for its failure to address the rising attacks on minority groups, particularly Hindus.

What’s Next for the Hindu Community?

With tensions high and protests continuing, the situation for Bangladesh’s Hindu community remains uncertain. The arrests of Chinmoy Krishna Das and Shyam Das Prabhu have highlighted the fragile state of religious freedom in the country. As violence continues, both local and international observers are urging for peace and the protection of minority rights in Bangladesh.
