Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Choti Diwali or Kali Chaudas, is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin (October-November) in the Hindu calendar. Mythological Significance:
The festival commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, who had tormented the heavens and abducted 16,100 women. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and freed the imprisoned women. The day is also believed to be the day when Lord Krishna freed the Earth from the tyranny of Narakasura, restoring peace and happiness.
Rituals and Traditions:
- Early Morning Bath (Ubtan and Abhyanga Snan):
On this day, people wake up early before sunrise and apply ubtan (a paste of turmeric, sandalwood, and other herbs) on their bodies, followed by an oil bath (Abhyanga Snan). This ritual is believed to cleanse the body of sins and impurities, leading to spiritual purity and health. It is also a way to honor the removal of darkness and ignorance from one’s life. - Lighting Diyas:
Narak Chaturdashi is considered the precursor to Diwali, and people light diyas (lamps) to welcome prosperity, light, and positivity into their homes, dispelling any negative energies. - Offerings and Puja:
People perform special prayers to Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi, seeking their blessings for health, wealth, and prosperity. Offerings of sweets, fruits, and incense are made during the puja. - Charity and Prayers for Ancestors:
It is considered auspicious to donate food, clothes, and other essentials to the needy on this day. Many people also perform rituals to honor their ancestors, ensuring their souls rest in peace.
