Unrest Disrupts Voting Process in Rajasthan: Clashes, Allegations of Fake Voting Mar Election Day
The second phase of voting in the Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2023 was marred by violence and irregularities in four districts of the state – Sikar, Churu, Bharatpur, and Tonk. Incidents of alleged fake voting, obstruction of voters, and assaults on polling personnel cast a shadow over the electoral process.
Sikar
In Fatehpur Shekhawati, a clash erupted between two groups over allegations of fake voting. The confrontation escalated into heavy stone pelting, leaving a policeman with a head injury and several others injured.
Churu
The Shitla Chowk polling booth in Churu witnessed uproar over fake voting allegations. A heated argument between BJP and Congress workers escalated into a physical altercation, with both sides resorting to sticks and rods. Police intervention managed to defuse the situation.
Bharatpur
Allegations of fake voting by polling booth staff sparked a major commotion in Bharatpur. Upon being informed of the irregularities, voters gathered at the booth to protest. Despite police intervention, the booth staff abandoned the premises and fled.
Dholpur
The situation in Dholpur turned volatile as reports of firing and stone pelting emerged from a polling booth. Polling officials were allegedly assaulted, and a young girl reportedly sustained serious injuries. District Collector Anil Aggarwal and SP Manoj Kumar rushed to the spot with a strong police contingent to restore order.
Tonk
Incidents of stone pelting and violence marred the voting process in the Devli Uniara assembly constituency of Tonk. Police resorted to tear gas shelling to control the unruly crowd. Supporters of BJP candidate Vijay Bainsla accused the administration of working under the influence of the incumbent MLA, alleging the deletion of 60-70 voters’ names. Two elderly individuals sustained injuries in the ensuing scuffle and were taken to the hospital.
State Election Commission’s Response
The Rajasthan State Election Commission has taken cognizance of the violence and allegations of fake voting and initiated an investigation into the incidents. The commission has assured strict action against those found responsible.
