Mokshada Ekadashi: A Legend from the Brahmanda Purana
The Brahmanda Purana tells a legend about the Mokshada Ekadashi. Lord Krishna narrates the story to the Pandava King Yudhishthira about a benevolent king in the city of Champakanagar who treated his subjects (the Vishnu-worshipping Vaishnavas) like his family. One night, the king had a terrible dream about his father suffering in hell.
The next day, the king narrated his nightmare to his wise council of ministers. They advised him to approach the Parvata Muni or Sage of the Mountain. The sage told the king that his father was being tormented for the sins he had committed against his wife. He further advised the king to observe a vrat, or fast, on Mokshada Ekadashi day to absolve his father of his sins.
The king followed the sage’s advice. He and his family fasted on Mokshada Ekadashi, and his father was redeemed.
