With Lok Sabha elections approaching, whispers about seat-sharing agreements are getting louder. In Uttar Pradesh, sources suggest the Samajwadi Party (SP) may offer up to 10 seats to the Congress and 5-7 to the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
Though the SP and Congress haven’t had the smoothest past, both parties seem to be warming up to a possible alliance. This follows the formation of the I.N.D.I.A bloc, aimed at creating a united front against the BJP.
While the final seat distribution is yet to be finalized, these numbers would mark a significant change from the 2017 elections, where the SP-Congress alliance secured only 54 seats.
I.N.D.I.A Bloc Gears Up for Seat-Sharing Talks
The I.N.D.I.A bloc, comprising various regional parties, held a crucial meeting on December 19th. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced a focus on state-level seat-sharing discussions and emphasized public meetings across India.
Highlighting the urgency, Kharge stated that the bloc aims to finalize seat allocation by the second week of January. He also confirmed that decisions on the Prime Ministerial candidate will only be made after the elections.
Beyond UP: I.N.D.I.A Bloc’s National Ambitions
Kharge further stressed the importance of presenting a united front on a national level. He plans to hold joint meetings across various states to ensure public awareness and strengthen the alliance.
Interestingly, Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, key figures in the I.N.D.I.A bloc proposed Kharge himself as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate for the opposition.
