The Congress party has faced a devastating defeat in the recent assembly elections held in Dewas district, Madhya Pradesh. The party failed to secure even a single seat across the five constituencies. Furthermore, two of the party’s veteran leaders, Sajjan Singh Verma and Deepak Joshi, lost their respective elections.
Sajjan Singh Verma, a senior Congress leader and former cabinet minister in the government of Abhinav, contested the Dewas assembly seat but was defeated by BJP candidate Gayatri Raje. Verma’s defeat is being seen as a major setback for the Congress party, as he has been a prominent figure in Madhya Pradesh politics.
Similarly, Deepak Joshi, the son of former Chief Minister Kailash Joshi, also lost his election. Deepak, who switched from the BJP to Congress before the election, contested from the Dewas-Sonkatti seat but was defeated by BJP candidate Laxman Singh.
Sajjan Singh Verma’s defeat from the Sonkutch assembly seat has further amplified the Congress party’s woes. Verma lost to BJP’s Dr. Rajesh Sonkar by a margin of 25,437 votes. Dr. Sonkar received 108,869 votes, while Verma garnered 83,432 votes.
Verma, a veteran Congress leader, had served four consecutive terms as the MLA for Sonkutch and was considered a strong contender for victory. His loss in Sonkutch is being regarded as a significant blow to Congress, reflecting its declining position in Madhya Pradesh.
The Congress party has been completely wiped out in Dewas, with the BJP winning all five seats in the district.
- Dewas Seat: BJP’s Gayatri Raje Akhtar defeated Congress’s Pradeep Chaudhary by a narrow margin of 13 votes.
- Sonkutch Seat: BJP’s Dr. Rajesh Sonkar defeated Congress’s Sajjan Singh Verma by a margin of 25,000 votes.

- Bagli Seat: BJP’s Rakesh Meena defeated Congress’s Ramlal Yadav by 18,000 votes.
- Pitgaon Seat: BJP’s Ashish Govind Sharma defeated Congress’s Deepak Joshi by 12,000 votes.
Deepak Joshi, the son of Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kailash Joshi, made the switch from the BJP to Congress before the elections. He contested from the Pitgaon seat, but was defeated by BJP’s Ashish Govind Sharma.
The Congress party’s crushing defeat in Dewas reflects the party’s declining influence in Madhya Pradesh. The loss of key leaders like Sajjan Singh Verma and Deepak Joshi, coupled with the party’s failure to win a single seat in the district, has dealt a significant blow to its political standing in the region.
