New Delhi: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, around 4 lakh names were removed from the voter list in Delhi. Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Krishnamurthy said the action was taken to keep the voter list clean and up-to-date.
The names removed included those of permanently moved, deceased and duplicate voters. After this purge, Delhi now has 1.47 crore voters, which is 58,182 less than last year.
The CEO said that the final voter list shows a significant increase in the number of young voters in Delhi. He said that enrollment of youth voters increased by 85.8% during SSR 2024.
He further said that the increase in the number of third-gender voters also reflects the positive result of special efforts made by the election machinery towards ensuring an inclusive electoral roll.
The CEO said the gender ratio has also increased from 838 to 843, which “reflects significant progress in efforts towards electoral inclusion of women”.
He said that various systematic voter education and electoral participation (SVEEP) activities executed during the SSR were focused on raising awareness about the eligibility date of January 1, 2024.
The CEO advised eligible voters of Delhi to use digital services like the Voter Helpline app and the Election Commission of India (ECI) website to access electoral services through their phones. He also said that ECI’s enabled applications can be used especially by people with disabilities to access electoral services in remote areas.
“The use of traditional and digital tools, door-to-door verification and SSR ensures a level playing field for all citizens to exercise their democratic rights,” the CEO said.
