Former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda announced on January 22, 2024, that he would not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo said he no longer wants to contest elections due to his age.

Regarding the possible candidature of JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy in the Lok Sabha elections, Deve Gowda said no decision has been taken yet. He said that whatever decision Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes, he will follow it.

Notably, the JD(S) had joined the BJP-led NDA in September last year, and both parties had expressed their intention to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka together.
Deve Gowda said, “No decision has been taken yet. We will talk to Prime Minister Modi and whatever decision he takes, we will follow it.”
