The popularity of Lakshadweep, India’s smallest union territory, has received a boost due to the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lakshadweep has become the most searched term on Google search engine, being searched more than 100,000 times in a day.
The Prime Minister visited the Union Territory on 2 and 3 January. He shared some pictures of the picturesque archipelago on January 4. Since then, Lakshadweep remains the most searched keyword on Google search engine.
The Prime Minister praised the “stunning” beauty of the islands and the “incredible warmth” of their people. He said he had the opportunity to interact with people in Agatti, Bangaram and Kavaratti.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said PM Modi’s visit has drawn global attention to Lakshadweep and its huge tourism potential. He said that more tourists will contribute to the prosperity of Lakshadweep and also experience its unique culture and traditions.
During his visit to Lakshadweep, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹1,150 crore in Agatti. He also inaugurated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI – SOFC) project, which aims to overcome the challenge of slow internet speeds in the Union Territory.
He also inaugurated the Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, which will produce 1.5 lakh liters of clean drinking water every day and functional household tap connections (FHTC) to all households in Agatti and Minicoy islands.
It is clear that Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep has significantly increased the popularity of the archipelago. This growth is a huge potential for the tourism industry and can contribute to the economic development of Lakshadweep.
