Supreme Court may soon hear the petition of Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena
The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena has submitted a letter to the Supreme Court, requesting an urgent hearing on its petition challenging the Maharashtra Speaker’s order to recognize the Eknath Shinde-led faction as the ‘real Shiv Sena’.
The Thackeray faction has expressed apprehension that, depending on the decisions implemented, a situation may arise in which the Uddhav Thackeray-led group of MLAs may face disqualification if they disobey the instructions issued by the MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly. Do not follow.
On Wednesday, in a significant blow to the Uddhav Thackeray faction, Maharashtra President Rahul Narvekar ruled that the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was legitimate, citing the support of a majority of the party’s MLAs. The Speaker was deciding on the disqualification petitions of rival Shiv Sena factions.
In its letter before the top court, the Thackeray faction has stressed the extreme urgency of the present matter, citing the continued presence of Shinde faction MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly, as well as their senior positions in the Maharashtra government. The post of Chief Minister is an insult to constitutional values and democratic principles. Therefore, the matter is extremely urgent.
The Supreme Court can hear this petition soon. If the court stays the Speaker’s order recognizing the Shinde faction as the ‘real Shiv Sena’, it will be a major blow to the survival of the Eknath Shinde government.
What can happen from the Supreme Court’s decision?
If the Supreme Court stays the Speaker’s order to recognize the Shinde faction as the ‘real Shiv Sena’, it will mean that the Uddhav Thackeray faction is the legitimate leadership of the Shiv Sena. This will open the way for the restoration of the Uddhav Thackeray government.
However, if the Supreme Court upholds the Speaker’s order recognizing the Shinde faction, it will cement the survival of the Eknath Shinde government. This will make it politically difficult for the Uddhav Thackeray faction.
