Thane, Maharashtra, February 28, 2024: The Indian Navy today celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of its fourth Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, christened LSAM 18 (Yard 128). This marks a crucial step forward in the 11 x ACTCM Barge Project, a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence procurement.
The addition of these specialized barges will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. They are designed to facilitate the safe and efficient transportation, embarkation, and disembarkation of critical supplies, including ammunition, to naval ships at jetties and outer harbours. This improved logistical capability translates to faster response times, increased flexibility, and enhanced operational readiness, allowing the Navy to effectively address diverse maritime challenges.
The ACTCM Barges are proudly designed and constructed by MSME Shipyard M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane, exemplifying the success of the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative. This not only fosters self-reliance in crucial defence equipment but also strengthens the domestic shipbuilding industry, creating jobs and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
The launch of LSAM 18 follows a rigorous development process, emphasizing the commitment to quality and safety. During the design phase, comprehensive model testing was conducted at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam. This meticulous approach ensures that the barges meet the strictest naval regulations and operational requirements, guaranteeing optimal performance and unwavering reliability at sea.
With the successful launch of LSAM 18, the 11 x ACTCM Barge Project remains on track for completion. The addition of the remaining three barges will further bolster the logistical capabilities of the Indian Navy, empowering it to effectively safeguard India’s maritime interests and contribute to regional stability.
