Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a stirring speech today at the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit West Bengal’ program in Siliguri, West Bengal. The event marked the inauguration and dedication of multiple rail and road infrastructure projects valued at over Rs 4500 crore, signifying a significant step towards a more developed West Bengal.
Recognizing the strategic importance of North Bengal as a gateway to the Northeast and neighbouring countries, PM Modi emphasized the government’s focus on its development alongside the entire state. Upgraded rail and road infrastructure is a cornerstone of this vision.
The Prime Minister highlighted the completion of electrification projects on key rail lines like Eklakhi-Balurghat, Raninagar Jalpaiguri-Haldibari, and Siliguri-Aluabari. These initiatives will not only expedite train travel in North and South Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri districts but also reduce pollution near forest areas. Additionally, the electrification of the Barsoi-Radhikapur section will benefit both Bihar and West Bengal. Further strengthening regional connectivity, a new passenger train service between Siliguri and Radhikapur was flagged off, symbolizing the government’s commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
PM Modi underscored the government’s dedication to ensuring trains in West Bengal operate at par with the rest of the nation. This commitment is evident in the introduction of modern, high-speed trains and the ongoing expansion of rail connectivity with Bangladesh. He also mentioned the inclusion of Siliguri station in the Amrit Bharat station upgrade program and the launch of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train connecting North Bengal with Guwahati and Howrah. Looking towards the future, PM Modi declared, “In these 10 years, we have taken the railways development from passenger to express speed. In our third term, this will move forward at superfast speed.”
The inauguration of two road projects worth over Rs 3,000 crore further bolstered the development agenda. The four-laning of the Ghoshpukur-Dhupguri section of NH 27 and the construction of the Islampur Bypass will significantly ease traffic congestion in Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, and Mainaguri. These projects will not only enhance connectivity to Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar but also facilitate easier access to tourist destinations like Darjeeling and Dooars. Furthermore, they are poised to stimulate trade, industry, and the tea garden sector in the region.
The Prime Minister concluded his address by reiterating the central government’s commitment to West Bengal’s development and congratulated the people on these vital infrastructure projects. The event was graced by dignitaries like Governor C V Ananda Bose, Union Minister of State Nisith Pramanik, and Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly.
The ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit West Bengal’ program signifies a significant leap forward in infrastructure development for West Bengal. By prioritizing both advanced rail networks and improved road connectivity, the central government is laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and connected future for the state.
