In a solemn ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 30, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the esteemed Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, upon former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, as well as agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, all posthumously.
Family members of the recipients accepted the awards on their behalf, symbolizing their enduring legacy and contributions to the nation.
PV Prabhakar Rao, son of the late Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, graciously received the honour from the President. Jayant Chaudhary, grandson of Chaudhary Charan Singh and chief of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), accepted the prestigious award on behalf of his grandfather. The daughter of MS Swaminathan, Nitya Rao, and the son of Karpoori Thakur, Ram Nath Thakur, also received the awards with reverence.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other dignitaries, highlighting the significance of this occasion in honouring the exemplary service and leadership of these individuals.
This year’s Bharat Ratna recipients also include the stalwart of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani.
PV Narasimha Rao fondly remembered as the ‘Chanakya of Indian politics,’ served as Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996. He ushered in economic reforms and steered the nation through challenging times, leaving an indelible mark on Indian politics. Chaudhary Charan Singh, a champion of land reforms and integrity, held the prime ministerial office from July 1979 to January 1980, advocating for the welfare of farmers and marginalized communities.
Renowned agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan hailed as the ‘father of the green revolution’ in India, revolutionized the agricultural landscape, ensuring food security and empowering small farmers. Karpoori Thakur, affectionately known as ‘jannayak,’ spearheaded social justice initiatives during his tenure as Bihar Chief Minister, striving to uplift the underprivileged sections of society.
Through this honour, their legacies continue to inspire generations and uphold the ideals of service and dedication to the nation.
