The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has wrapped up the fiscal year with a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of ₹ 4 lakh crore, doubling its GMV from the previous fiscal year. This achievement underscores the portal’s digital prowess and functionalities, which have significantly improved efficiency, transparency, and seamlessness in public procurement.
The procurement of services through the GeM portal has been a key driver behind this substantial GMV growth. Nearly 50% of the GMV is attributed to service procurement, marking an impressive surge of 205% compared to the previous fiscal year. GeM has enabled small domestic entrepreneurs to participate in government tenders, breaking down barriers posed by established service providers. The wide range of services available on GeM has empowered states to procure innovative solutions to meet their evolving needs.
Increased participation from states has fueled this remarkable growth in GMV. Leading states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi have exceeded their public procurement targets for the year. Central entities, including ministries and CPSEs, have also played a significant role, contributing to nearly 85% of the ₹ 4 lakh crore milestone. Ministries of Coal, Power, and Petroleum & Natural Gas, along with their subsidiaries, have emerged as the highest procuring entities at the central level.
GeM’s extensive network of over 1.5 lakh government buyers and 21 lakh sellers and service providers has been instrumental in achieving this feat. The platform has fostered grassroots engagement by onboarding last-mile buyers and sellers and integrating Panchayats and cooperatives into its procurement ecosystem. GeM has also collaborated with over 89,421 Panchayats and 760+ Cooperatives, facilitating sustainable procurement and optimizing public spending at the grassroots level.
Shri PK Singh, CEO of GeM, highlighted the platform’s inclusive initiatives such as ‘Vocal for Local,’ ‘One District, One Product,’ ‘Startup Runway,’ and ‘Womaniya.’ Approximately 50% of the orders have been awarded to marginalized seller segments, including artisans, weavers, craftsmen, MSEs, women-led enterprises, SC/STs, SHGs, FPOs, and startups. GeM’s collaboration with over 5.2 lakh Common Service Centers (CSCs) and 1.5 lakh India Post offices has expanded its outreach and capacity-building efforts at the grassroots level, resulting in job creation and increased incomes.
Earlier this fiscal year, GeM partnered with Tata Consultancy Services to enhance its technological infrastructure, aiming to improve user experience, transparency, and inclusivity. Offering over 12,070+ product categories and 320+ service categories, GeM has become a one-stop shop for seamless public procurement, providing opportunities for sellers and service providers across the nation to showcase their products and services transparently.
GeM’s journey from ₹ 422 crore in GMV in 2016 to ₹ 4 lakh crore in a short period underscores its rapid growth and prominence as a leading public procurement platform globally. Committed to enhancing efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity, GeM continues to revolutionize the public procurement domain.
