Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress on Friday regarding a tax notice demanding ₹1823 crore issued to the party. Sarma insinuated that Congress, by allegedly evading tax payments, was effectively acting against the interests of welfare programs, impoverished individuals, and marginalized segments of society.
Known for his critical stance towards Congress, Sarma emphasized that withholding taxes from the government equates to withholding benefits from the underprivileged. He underscored the importance of tax revenue in financing public welfare initiatives, suggesting that Congress’s failure to meet its tax obligations reflects poorly on its dedication to social welfare.
In response to the tax notice, the Congress contended that the BJP had also violated income tax laws and should be served a demand notice of ₹4600 crore. Congress leader Ajay Maken accused the BJP of similar infractions, while Jairam Ramesh denounced the situation as “tax terrorism” orchestrated by the BJP-led government.
Prominent Congress figure Rahul Gandhi issued a stern warning, pledging rigorous action against those undermining democracy once there is a change in government. He vowed to take decisive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Furthermore, Jairam Ramesh announced plans for extensive protests against what he termed as the “Modi government’s ongoing tax terrorism” targeting the Congress. He outlined the party’s intention to stage public demonstrations at both state and district levels, with senior leaders and party members actively participating in the protests.
