India and Italy took a significant step towards enhanced defence cooperation during the 10th Joint Defence Committee (JDC) meeting held in New Delhi on March 13, 2024. The meeting, co-chaired by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Italian Secretary General of Defence Lt Gen Luciano Portolano, underscored both nations’ commitment to a stronger bilateral defence relationship.
The discussions primarily centred on fostering collaboration between Indian and Italian defence industries. Both sides explored avenues for joint ventures, with a particular emphasis on co-production projects within India. This initiative holds the potential to create a mutually beneficial environment, leveraging the technological expertise of both nations while bolstering India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
The Defence Secretary proposed integrating Indian vendors into the supply chains of Italian defence companies. This strategic move could enhance supply chain resilience for both nations. Indian suppliers would gain access to new markets and opportunities, while Italian companies would benefit from a wider and potentially more cost-effective supplier base.
The JDC meeting wasn’t solely confined to industrial cooperation. Discussions also encompassed broader strategic issues, including the security situation in the Indo-Pacific region. This exchange of views reflects a growing convergence of interests between India and Italy on regional security matters.
The 10th JDC meeting comes on the heels of a defence cooperation agreement signed in October 2023 during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Italy. This agreement serves as a crucial framework for deepening defence ties between the two countries. The JDC meeting further solidified this commitment and charted a course for future collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
