The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) successfully concluded their collaborative maritime security exercise, “Sea Defenders-2024,” at Port Blair on March 9th, 2024. Spanning four days, this intensive exercise served as a cornerstone for strengthening cooperation and interoperability between the two Coast Guard forces.
“Sea Defenders-2024” pushed the ICG and USCG to refine their capabilities across a broad spectrum of maritime security challenges. A critical focus was on enhancing response mechanisms to environmental threats. The exercise witnessed a well-coordinated demonstration by ICG ships and aircraft in containing and mitigating simulated oil spills. This joint effort underscored the importance of safeguarding the marine ecosystem and ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels in the Indian Ocean region.
Beyond traditional piracy concerns, the exercise addressed the growing prevalence of asymmetric threats. A particularly noteworthy element involved simulating the neutralization of drone attacks on commercial merchant traffic. This scenario highlighted the evolving nature of maritime threats and the need for coastguards to adapt their strategies accordingly.
To effectively tackle contemporary maritime crimes, the exercise placed significant emphasis on honing VBSS (Visit, Board, Search and Seizure) operations. Through meticulously planned and executed drills, the ICG and USCG personnel sharpened their skills in inspecting vessels suspected of illegal activities. This collaborative effort is vital for ensuring the safety of maritime trade routes and combating criminal activity on the high seas.
Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities were also a key focus area. Indian Coast Guard helicopters and Dornier aircraft played a vital role, showcasing their proficiency in aerial surveillance and conducting simulated rescue missions. This joint training strengthens their ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies at sea, potentially saving lives.
A crucial element of “Sea Defenders-2024” went beyond tactical manoeuvres at sea. The USCGC Bertholf’s visit to Port Blair fostered a spirit of camaraderie and cultural exchange between the crews. Crew members participated in cross-visits, gaining valuable insights into each other’s ships, equipment, and procedures. Additionally, a friendly badminton competition provided a welcome opportunity for interaction outside a professional setting. These social interactions are essential for building mutual understanding and fostering lasting connections, which can prove invaluable during future collaborations.
