Securing the favour of Muslims, who constitute nearly 30% of West Bengal’s population, is crucial for the TMC to bolster its standing in the Lok Sabha. However, the party risks pushing boundaries too far.
In the lead-up to next month’s general election, while opposition parties nationwide ardently vie for the Hindu vote, with even self-proclaimed secular parties adopting “Me too Hindu” slogans, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal is pursuing a strategy that might seem unconventional given the prevailing climate: actively courting Muslim voters.
Specifically, it is targeting right-wing Muslims staunchly opposed not only to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but also to the Congress and the Left.
