The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) distributed a significant package of support to rural artisans in Jammu and Kashmir, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant and thriving rural India. This initiative goes beyond just distributing equipment; it’s part of a comprehensive strategy to revitalize traditional crafts and empower local communities.
The distribution included 411 machinery and tool kits under the Khadi Gramodyog Vikas Yojana. This equips artisans with modern tools, enabling them to increase productivity and improve the quality of their products. Additionally, 200 trainees undergoing training at PMTC Pampore received certificates, signifying their newfound skills that can be directly applied to their chosen craft.
KVIC recognized the unique needs of different artisan groups within J&K. The Honey Mission Scheme provided 300 bee boxes to 30 beekeepers, fostering the growth of the honey production industry. Similarly, 100 electric wheels were distributed to potters under the Kumbhar Empowerment Scheme, easing their workload and potentially increasing output. This targeted approach ensures the support reaches the most relevant communities and has a direct impact on their livelihoods.
The success stories highlighted by KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar showcase the nationwide impact of centrally-backed programs. Over 27,000 electric wheels distributed to potters across India demonstrate the scalability of these initiatives. Similarly, the Honey Mission Scheme providing over 2 lakh bee boxes highlights KVIC’s commitment to promoting sustainable beekeeping practices. In J&K itself, the distribution of over 8,950 bee boxes and bee colonies in the past five years reflects the program’s significant footprint in the region.
KVIC’s efforts go beyond just economic benefits. By establishing direct communication with artisans, over 10,000 Khadi artisans, with a noteworthy 80% being women, are now employed through 110 Khadi Institutions in the Jammu State Office. This not only empowers women but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) has been instrumental in creating new job opportunities in J&K. With over 54,000 new units established and employment opportunities provided to over 4.3 lakh people in the past five years, KVIC has played a vital role in driving economic growth in the region.
KVIC’s focus on taking village industry activities like beekeeping, pottery, leatherwork, and incense stick making to villages and border areas demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development. By promoting these traditional crafts and equipping artisans with the necessary skills and tools, KVIC empowers local communities and fosters a sense of self-reliance. This not only preserves cultural heritage but also creates a foundation for local entrepreneurship and economic prosperity in rural areas.
