In a significant push for grassroots development, NITI Aayog launched the “Vocal for Local” initiative on March 13, 2024, as part of its Aspirational Blocks Programme. This program targets economically lagging blocks across India, aiming to invigorate local economies and nurture entrepreneurship at the ground level.
The initiative goes beyond just economic growth. It fosters a spirit of self-reliance among residents of these aspirational blocks, empowering them to become architects of their sustainable development and shared prosperity. “Aakanksha,” a symbolic logo unveiled alongside the program, serves as a unifying brand for the diverse local products these blocks have to offer.
NITI Aayog is taking concrete steps to bridge the gap between these aspiring entrepreneurs and the wider market. A dedicated section for Aspirational Blocks under the brand name “Aakanksha” has been established on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. This provides these local businesses with a crucial platform to showcase their products and connect with a national audience.
Furthermore, NITI Aayog is fostering partnerships with key organizations like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Through this collaboration, micro-enterprises within these aspirational blocks will receive technical and operational support. This includes assistance with e-commerce onboarding, establishing business linkages with potential customers and suppliers, financial and digital literacy training, essential documentation and certification processes, and skill enhancement programs. This comprehensive capacity-building approach empowers these local businesses to not only compete effectively in the domestic market but also lays the groundwork for future export opportunities.
