Congress MP Rahul Gandhi made a significant announcement on Friday, pledging that if his party secures victory in the Lok Sabha elections, they will reserve 50 per cent of government jobs for women.
Gandhi stressed the importance of ensuring equal representation for women in government, noting that they comprise 50 per cent of India’s population and are equally represented in higher secondary and higher education. He reaffirmed the Congress’s commitment to “Aadhi Abaadi Poora Haq” (Half the Population, Full Rights), asserting that women’s active involvement in governance is vital for the nation’s progress.
To advance this agenda, Congress has taken concrete measures, including reserving half of all new government job openings for women. They also advocate for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies.
Gandhi highlighted the significance of providing women with stable income, prospects, and self-respect, stating that it will empower them to become the pillars of society. He envisioned a transformed India where women hold 50 per cent of government positions, thereby contributing significantly to the nation’s development.
Before this announcement, Congress had unveiled five guarantees for women, encompassing financial assistance, job reservation, enhanced support for grassroots workers, legal empowerment at the grassroots level, and the expansion of hostels nationwide to better accommodate working women.
