While campaigning for the BJP in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Congress for its stance on inheritance tax. He claimed the party wanted to reintroduce the tax, which Rajiv Gandhi had previously abolished to benefit his mother, Indira Gandhi. Modi suggested that Congress intends to take away half of people’s earnings through the tax and referred to a proposal by a senior Congress adviser regarding its reimposition.
The Prime Minister also accused Congress of planning to redistribute wealth to infiltrators and asserted that the party would conduct a national caste survey that includes an economic report to measure economic disparities. Modi’s remarks were criticised by Congress, which called them misleading and accused him of lying to distract voters.
In the meantime, the Election Commission issued notices to BJP President JP Nadda and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, instructing them to ensure that their respective parties’ star campaigners follow the commission’s guidelines for maintaining a high-quality of discourse during the campaign.
