On April 22, 2024, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh embarked on a visit to Siachen, recognized as the world’s highest battlefield, to personally evaluate the security situation. Accompanied by Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, and General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps Lieutenant General Rashim Bali, he engaged with soldiers confronting the challenges of extreme weather and rugged terrain.
Following aerial reconnaissance, the Defense Minister landed at a forward post situated at an altitude of 15,100 feet. There, he received a comprehensive briefing on operational readiness and the prevailing security scenario in the Siachen Glacier. Additionally, he consulted with ground commanders regarding operational challenges.
Addressing the soldiers, Rajnath Singh praised their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation amidst harsh conditions. He expressed gratitude to the Armed Forces personnel for their sacrifices, ensuring the safety of every citizen. He emphasized that the valor and determination displayed by soldiers in the icy Siachen glacier would resonate through history, serving as a perennial source of inspiration.
Rajnath Singh emphasized Siachen’s significance as a symbol of India’s sovereignty and resolve, likening it to the capitals of Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. He hailed Operation Meghdoot, launched by the Indian Army in Siachen on April 13, 1984, as a milestone in the nation’s military history.
During the visit, the Defense Minister paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Siachen War Memorial, honoring their supreme sacrifice for the nation.
This visit, delayed due to adverse weather conditions following his earlier visit to Leh on March 24, 2024, underscores Rajnath Singh’s commitment to engaging with troops in challenging environments despite his busy schedule.
