On April 13th, Iran launched a significant attack on Israel, firing over 300 drones and missiles. This strike was reportedly a response to an earlier Israeli operation targeting an Iranian consulate in Syria. The Iranian attack resulted in casualties among the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Israel has vowed to retaliate for the Iranian attack, heightening fears of a prolonged conflict. This has prompted India’s Commerce Ministry to explore potential measures to mitigate any negative impacts on trade in the region.
On April 15th, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal stated that the ministry is in communication with various stakeholders, including export promotion councils, shipping companies, and other government departments. They are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take action if the conflict becomes protracted.
The specific measures India might take will depend on how the conflict unfolds. However, the Commerce Ministry has indicated a willingness to implement “remedial steps” if necessary to safeguard India’s trade interests.
