In the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections across 21 states and Union Territories for 102 parliamentary seats, Tripura witnessed the highest voter turnout at 80.17%. The estimated overall voter turnout stood at 63.89% by 9:00 PM on April 19, with final figures awaited from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Voting, which commenced at 7 AM and concluded at 6 PM, saw participation from various states and Union Territories. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA aims for a third consecutive term under PM Modi’s leadership, targeting 400 out of 543 seats. The opposition, led by the Congress under the banner of INDIA bloc, presents a challenge.
Despite challenges like a heat wave, the Election Commission noted a high voter turnout nationwide. However, incidents of violence were reported in parts of West Bengal and Manipur.
