Amid lively cultural displays, patriotic chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, and pledges of developmental endeavours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded a dynamic 20-minute roadshow spanning 1.4 km at Pondy Bazaar’s Pedestrian Plaza in T Nagar on Tuesday.
Touching down at Chennai airport at 6 PM, the PM proceeded to Panagal Park, the inception point of the event, via road. At 6:30 PM, he embarked on the roadshow in an open jeep, accompanied by BJP state president K Annamalai and BJP’s South Chennai candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan.
Dressed in a white shirt and veshti (dhoti), Modi proudly held the lotus symbol, waving to a multitude of supporters who showered him with petals. The route was adorned with diverse cultural performances to extend a warm welcome to the PM.
Impressed by the enthusiastic reception, Modi expressed his sentiments, stating, “Chennai has truly captivated me! Today’s roadshow in this vibrant city will forever remain etched in my memory. The fervour in Chennai exemplifies Tamil Nadu’s staunch support for the NDA.”
Modi pledged a slew of initiatives for Tamil Nadu, affirming, “Our government remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of Chennai’s residents. Redevelopment projects for railway stations, including Egmore, are underway. Crucial road developments such as the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway and the expansion of existing road networks will bolster commerce and connectivity. Furthermore, initiatives like a multi-modal logistics park and a discovery campus at IIT Madras will spur innovation and economic growth. We are devoted to promoting Tamil culture and language globally.”
Expanding on his vision, Modi added, “The NDA government will persist in its efforts across critical sectors including roads, ports, urban transportation, culture, commerce, connectivity, and energy. Addressing pertinent issues in Chennai, such as reinforcing disaster management and bolstering support for the MSME sector, remains a priority.”
However, the day began on a challenging note for BJP members as police removed party posters and cutouts. Subsequently, police disallowed placards with wooden handles at the roadshow site.
Before Modi’s arrival, the Pedestrian Plaza transformed into a festive hub with dance performances, songs showcasing BJP policies, and traditional folk art. Local businesses temporarily shuttered to accommodate the rally, with special provisions made for disabled individuals to partake in the event. S Saroja from Virugambakkam shared her excitement, expressing, “I am witnessing him for the first time, and I was determined to catch a glimpse at any cost.”
This marks Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inaugural road rally in Chennai city in the past decade.
