Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Coochbehar, launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool party regarding the Sandeshkhali incident. He emphasized that the culprits involved would face severe consequences, spending their lives behind bars. Modi asserted that the BJP is committed to empowering women and ensuring justice for victims of such incidents. He urged the people of West Bengal to strengthen the BJP to prevent further injustices against women.
Modi, addressing a public rally in Coochbehar, expressed gratitude towards Mamata Banerjee and the West Bengal government. He recounted an incident from his previous visit, where he faced hindrances during his rally due to a platform constructed by Mamata’s administration. However, he acknowledged the absence of such obstacles this time and thanked Mamata Banerjee and the state government for facilitating a smooth event.
The BJP has gained significant electoral ground in North Bengal since the last Lok Sabha elections in 2019. The constituencies of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal are set to vote on April 19, marking the beginning of Bengal’s seven-phase elections.
Modi’s remarks on the Sandeshkhali incident coincided with sharp criticism from the Calcutta High Court, which denounced the incident and held the district administration and ruling party accountable. The court’s scathing comments underscored the gravity of the situation and the imperative need for accountability.
The Sandeshkhali incident involved protests by women against Trinamool leader Seikh Shahjahan, who was accused of land grabbing and sexual assault. Shahjahan, who remained absconding for nearly two months, was subsequently arrested by the West Bengal police and is currently in ED custody until April 13.
