The Tihar Jail administration announced that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was provided with a consultation from senior specialists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) via video conference on Saturday.
Delhi Minister Atishi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters carried insulin during a protest outside the Tihar Jail on Sunday, accusing the administration of failing to provide insulin to the jailed Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
Tihar Jail authorities confirmed that a senior doctor from AIIMS consulted Kejriwal for 40 minutes, assuring him that there were no serious concerns and advising him to continue with his prescribed medications, which would be regularly monitored.
The consultation was arranged following a request from Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal. Tihar medical officers were also present on the video call.
The consultation included a review of Kejriwal’s complete Glucose Monitoring Sensor record, as well as his diet and medication details. However, the jail officials stated that neither Kejriwal nor the doctors raised any concerns regarding insulin during the consultation.
Tihar Jail’s statement came amid allegations from AAP leaders that there was no diabetes specialist in the jail.
AAP leader Sanjay Singh alleged that Kejriwal was not being provided with insulin, claiming it to be a conspiracy to harm him. Singh warned that this situation would provoke a strong response from the people of Delhi on May 25.
Delhi Minister Atishi noted that Kejriwal, a diabetic patient for the past 30 years, had a sugar level of 300 on Sunday. She stressed that without insulin, his condition could not be managed and his life would be at risk.
AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized Tihar Jail’s report as misleading and pointed out that the jail’s request for a diabetologist contradicted their earlier claims of having adequate medical facilities for diabetic patients.
Bharadwaj highlighted that the Director General (Prisons) recently wrote to AIIMS requesting a diabetologist, a move he found questionable given that Kejriwal has been held at Tihar for nearly 20 days.
