Arvind Kejriwal has broken his silence regarding the Swati Maliwal assault case, stating that he seeks justice and a fair investigation. In an interview with PTI, Kejriwal emphasized that there are two versions of the incident and that he was not present at the scene when the alleged assault occurred on May 13.
Swati Maliwal, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, accused Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Kejriwal, of assaulting her at the chief minister’s residence. Bibhav has since been arrested. The Aam Aadmi Party has supported Bibhav, suggesting that Maliwal might be acting under the influence of the BJP.
Kejriwal addressed the incident for the first time since it sparked a political controversy in Delhi. He maintained that the matter is under judicial review and refrained from detailed comments to avoid influencing the proceedings. However, he underscored the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.
“I expect a fair investigation. Justice should be served. There are two versions of the event. Police should investigate both versions fairly and justice should be done,” Kejriwal said, adding that he was not present during the incident.
Swati Maliwal has made further allegations against the party, claiming that there was pressure on members to discredit her by leaking personal photos. She shared these claims on social media, adding to the controversy.
Delhi minister Atishi, along with Saurabh Bharadwaj and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, has publicly represented the party’s stance on the issue, while Kejriwal had remained silent until now. Bibhav Kumar is currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
Kejriwal also spoke about his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, highlighting her continuous support throughout his political journey. He clarified that Sunita has no interest in active politics despite her involvement during critical times, such as when Kejriwal was in jail.
“In every stage of my life, Sunita has supported me. I am fortunate to have a partner like her. To tolerate an eccentric person like me is not easy,” Kejriwal stated.
