The Government of India joined the global community in celebrating International Sun Day on May 3, 2024, highlighting the importance of solar energy in promoting a greener and healthier planet. To commemorate the occasion, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hosted the ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The marathon included 3 km and 5 km races to raise awareness about the crucial role of solar power in combating climate change and fostering a cleaner future.
The event demonstrated the nation’s dedication to solar energy and environmental sustainability. Bhupinder S. Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, stated: “This event showcases our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and underscores the importance of solar power in our journey towards environmental stewardship. The marathon aligns with the government’s vision of promoting physical fitness and wellness, encouraging citizens to lead active lives while supporting renewable energy. We appreciate the enthusiasm of all participants, which made the event a success. We aim to make this an annual tradition.”
Solar Stops in Six Cities Educate the Public on Solar Energy
As part of International Sun Day celebrations, Solar Stops were set up in six cities across India. The 12 engaging installations were located at major malls in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Vadodara, Guwahati, Varanasi, and Chennai, showcasing the innovative and sustainable aspects of solar energy and inviting attendees to learn more about its benefits.
Solart: All-India Intra-School Solar Art Competition
The Ministry also announced Solart, an All-India Intra-School Solar Art Competition, in celebration of International Sun Day. This competition encourages students across the country to express their creativity and increase awareness about solar energy through art. Winning students will receive commendation certificates from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.
