In adherence to its commitment to transparent electoral practices, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has cordially welcomed 75 delegates from 23 countries to observe India’s General Elections as part of the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP). The inaugural event, graced by CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar and ECs Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Shri Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, unfolded in New Delhi.
CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar underscored India’s substantial contribution to the global democratic landscape through its electoral processes and the diligent work of the Election Commission. He accentuated the distinctive character of Indian elections, characterized by voluntary participation, while emphasizing the Commission’s pivotal role in ensuring credibility through robust voter turnout and meticulous maintenance of electoral rolls.
In addressing the magnitude of the electoral endeavor, Shri Kumar highlighted the staggering electorate of 970 million, bolstered by over 15 million polling personnel deployed across 1 million polling stations nationwide. He extended an invitation to the delegates to immerse themselves in the myriad expressions of democracy firsthand, highlighting India’s vibrant electoral ethos.
On the sidelines of the event, bilateral discussions with Chief Election Commissioners from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Nepal were conducted, fostering enhanced international cooperation in electoral practices.
Delegates were briefed on various facets of Indian elections, encompassing EVM-VVPAT systems, IT initiatives, and the pivotal role of media. The program entails visits to six states to observe polling and assess preparedness in diverse constituencies, culminating on May 9, 2024.
This year’s delegation, comprising representatives from 23 countries and organizations such as Bhutan, Mongolia, Australia, and others, underscores the global interest in India’s democratic processes. Inclusion of members from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and media teams from Bhutan and Israel further accentuates the international significance of India’s General Elections.
