The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, attended and spoke at the 7th convocation of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Dharamshala today (May 6, 2024).
During her speech, President Murmu stated that change is a constant aspect of nature, though the pace of change has accelerated in recent years. We are now in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, with rapid advancements in fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The speed and scale of these changes mean that technology and required skills evolve quickly. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was impossible to predict what skills would be needed in the coming decades. Similarly, many current skills may become obsolete in the future. Thus, we must constantly learn new skills and cultivate flexible minds so that the younger generation can adapt to rapid changes. Students should be encouraged to maintain curiosity and a desire to learn, which will prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century.
President Murmu emphasized to the teachers present that education should help students become self-reliant and shape their character and personality. Education should also foster awareness of culture, tradition, and civilization. Teachers play a crucial role in this regard, as their duties extend beyond teaching and include building the nation’s future.
The President also stressed the importance of focusing on both “what to learn” and “how to learn.” When students engage in independent, stress-free learning, their creativity and imagination thrive, leading them to innovate and seek solutions to problems. Education should not be seen solely as a means of earning a livelihood but as a path to curiosity and discovery.
In her address to the students, President Murmu highlighted the potential for both good and evil within every individual. She advised the students to always choose the path of good, regardless of the challenges they face. She encouraged them to uphold human values such as compassion, integrity, and sensitivity, as these values enable a meaningful and successful life.
President Murmu concluded by acknowledging the immense potential for growth among the youth. They are vital in achieving the goal of a developed India. She urged them to dedicate themselves to the nation, as it is not only their human, social, and moral responsibility but also their civic duty.
