The Supreme Court Rejects Urgent Hearing of Delhi CM Kejriwal’s Plea for Extended Interim Bail
In a recent development, the Supreme Court has declined to expedite the listing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s request for a 7-day extension of his interim bail. As a result, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to return to Tihar Jail on June 2.
The SC registry turned down the application, citing that since the Chief Minister was granted the freedom to apply for regular bail from the trial court, the plea is not admissible. Kejriwal had obtained interim bail from Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta on May 10, with instructions to surrender to Tihar jail by June 2. The bench, on May 17, reserved its decision on his challenge to the legality of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a PMLA case related to a liquor scam.
The SC, in its refusal to accept the application, emphasized that as the verdict on the challenge to the arrest is already reserved, Kejriwal’s plea for an extension of interim bail does not pertain to the main petition.
