New Delhi, June 14, 2024: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a consultation paper on the ‘Revision of National Numbering Plan’ on June 6, 2024. Stakeholders are invited to submit written comments by July 4, 2024, and counter comments by July 18, 2024. A corresponding press release was issued on the same day.
TRAI has noted that certain media outlets have reported misinformation suggesting that TRAI plans to impose charges on customers for multiple SIMs or numbering resources. TRAI categorically denies these claims as baseless and misleading to the public.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as the custodian of telecommunication identifiers (TI) resources, requested TRAI’s recommendations for revising the National Numbering Plan to enhance the efficient management and allocation of these resources. The consultation paper aims to assess current factors affecting TI resource allocation and propose amendments to ensure adequate reserves for current and future needs.
TRAI’s consultation process is grounded in transparency and inclusivity, involving the publication of papers, solicitation of stakeholder feedback, analysis of international best practices, and public open house discussions. The final recommendations to the DoT are the result of diligent study and analysis.
TRAI emphasizes its commitment to minimal regulatory intervention and advocates for self-regulation within market forces. The Authority urges stakeholders and the public to refer to official communications on its website for accurate information regarding the consultation paper.
