The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has tragically risen to 29, with 16 more people succumbing after consuming spurious liquor at Karunapuram on June 18. Among the victims are two women and a transperson, with most fatalities occurring on Wednesday night.
Currently, over 60 individuals are receiving treatment at various hospitals, including Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital, as well as medical facilities in Salem, Villupuram, and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.
Sources indicate that the official death toll may be underreported, as it does not account for those who died before reaching medical facilities for treatment.
In response to the tragedy, Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is expected to visit the victims at Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital today. Additionally, more than 2,000 police personnel from various districts have been deployed in Kallakurichi to manage the situation
