In the context of strained relations between India and Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged a congratulatory message from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Modi highlighted the need for mutual respect and understanding between the two countries.
Modi shared his appreciation on social media: “Thank you @CanadianPM for the congratulatory message. India looks forward to working with Canada based on mutual understanding and respect for each other’s concerns.” This followed Trudeau’s recognition of Modi’s third consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
Previously, Trudeau’s office had posted: “Congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his electoral victory. Canada stands ready to work with his government to advance the relationship between our nations’ peoples—anchored to human rights, diversity, and the rule of law.”
Diplomatic ties have been tense since Trudeau’s accusations last year of India’s involvement in the assassination of pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has strongly denied these claims.
Recently, Canada announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with Nijjar’s murder, but India has stated that no specific or relevant evidence has been provided by Ottawa.
Furthermore, a Canadian Parliamentary Report last week identified India as the “second-most significant foreign interference threat” to its democratic institutions, suggesting that India’s influence efforts extend beyond countering pro-Khalistan elements.
Despite these difficulties, the exchange between Modi and Trudeau indicates a possibility for improving bilateral relations through mutual respect and understanding.
