New Delhi: The exit polls for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections predict another strong performance by the BJP in the national capital. According to the PMARQ exit poll, the BJP is expected to win all 7 of the seats in Delhi. Axis-MyIndia also forecasts a dominant showing for the BJP, with 6 seats going to the party and 1 seat to the INDIA bloc.
Polling for the seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi took place on May 25 during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The Election Commission of India reported a voter turnout of 58.69% in the national capital. Among the constituencies, North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout at 62.89%, while New Delhi had the lowest at 55.43%.
In the past two Lok Sabha elections, the BJP swept all seven seats in Delhi, relegating both the AAP and Congress to lower positions. In 2019, the BJP secured 56.86% of the vote share, while the Congress and AAP garnered 22.51% and 18.11%, respectively.
For this election, the Congress and AAP have joined forces under the INDIA banner to prevent another BJP clean sweep. AAP contested four seats, leaving the remaining three for the Congress. The BJP, on the other hand, changed six out of its seven sitting MPs, with Manoj Tiwari being the only incumbent re-nominated from North East Delhi.
Despite the AAP-Congress alliance, exit poll results suggest limited success for them. The final outcome will be revealed on June 4, when the votes are counted.
Delhi, with its seven parliamentary constituencies, holds significant sway in national politics. Traditionally, the city has seen a direct contest between the BJP and Congress, but since 2013, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has become a formidable force.
In the 2014 and 2019 general elections, the BJP won all seven seats in Delhi. For 2024, the BJP’s candidates include:
- Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi
- Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi
- Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi
- Harsh Deep Malhotra from East Delhi
- Yogendra Chandolia from North West Delhi
- Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk
- Kamaljeet Sehrawat from West Delhi
The seat-sharing agreement between Congress and AAP, finalized in late February, allocated four constituencies to AAP and three to Congress. AAP’s candidates are:
- Kuldeep Kumar in East Delhi
- Mahabal Mishra in West Delhi
- Somnath Bharti in New Delhi
- Sahi Ram Pahalwan in South Delhi
Congress fielded:
- J P Agarwal for Chandni Chowk
- Kanhaiya Kumar for North East Delhi
- Udit Raj for North West Delhi
The alliance aims to challenge the BJP’s dominance, but exit polls indicate that the BJP’s power show in Delhi is likely to continue.
