At least 18 people were killed and 19 others injured after their double-decker bus collided with a milk tanker in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao today. Among the deceased were three women and one child, police reported.
The bus, traveling from Sitamarhi in Bihar to Delhi, crashed into the milk tanker from behind on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway early this morning. The impact was so severe that passengers were flung from the vehicle. Visuals from the scene depicted bodies on the ground, twisted metal, shattered glass, and destroyed belongings.
“At around 5:15 am, a private bus from Motihari, Bihar, collided with a milk tanker. Eighteen people have lost their lives, and 19 others are injured,” said Gaurang Rathi, District Magistrate of Unnao.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his anguish over the tragedy and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured, according to his office.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences, stating, “The news of the death of many people in a road accident on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the family members of those who have become victims of such sudden death and wish for the speedy recovery of those injured,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
