New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faces a case under the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman in a social media post targeting National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma. The complaint, filed by Ms. Sharma, led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by the Delhi Police’s special cell under Section 79, which pertains to acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
The controversy stemmed from a remark made by Ms. Moitra regarding videos showing Ms. Sharma being assisted with an umbrella during a visit to meet women injured in the Hathras stampede. Ms. Moitra’s post, which included a “pajamas” reference, was later deleted, prompting the police to request details from the social media platform.
Ms. Sharma has also urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take appropriate action against Ms. Moitra, who represents Krishnanagar in West Bengal. Ms. Moitra, previously disqualified and subsequently re-elected, has remained defiant in response to the NCW’s actions, challenging the Delhi Police to take immediate action, even specifying her whereabouts in Nadia, West Bengal.
