In response to PM Modi’s comments targeting the Opposition for their criticism of the Agnipath scheme, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Prime Minister of engaging in ‘petty politics’ on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Kharge’s remarks came shortly after Modi, during his address at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, accused the Opposition of trying to weaken the Army by opposing the Agnipath scheme.
Kharge expressed his disapproval on social media, stating, “It is very unfortunate and deplorable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is doing petty politics even on occasions like paying tribute to martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas. No Prime Minister has ever done this before.”
He further criticized Modi’s claim that the Agnipath scheme was implemented at the Army’s request, calling it a “blatant lie” and an “unforgivable insult to our valiant Armed Forces.” Kharge referenced former Army Chief (Retd.) General MM Naravane, who allegedly stated that the Modi government misrepresented the scheme’s original plan.
Kharge added that General Naravane’s unpublished book claims the Agnipath scheme was a shock to the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He also highlighted that several retired officers have criticized the scheme for jeopardizing national security and the aspirations of rural youth.
Kharge pointed out that Agniveers do not receive pensions, gratuities, or other benefits, and called for the scheme to be scrapped. The Agnipath scheme, announced in June 2022, recruits personnel for four years, after which up to 25% can be permanently commissioned based on merit.
In his speech at Drass, PM Modi accused the Opposition of misleading the youth and undermining soldiers’ welfare. He also criticized past governments for not implementing One Rank One Pension and other measures to support servicemen. Modi’s speech included strong remarks against Pakistan, accusing it of using terrorism and proxy wars to remain relevant.
