In an early morning assault on July 14, a CRPF jawan was fatally shot and a policeman injured in an attack by suspected militants in Mongbung village, Jiribam district, Manipur.
The slain jawan, Ajay Kumar Jha, 43, from Bihar, succumbed to head injuries from the gunfire. The injured policeman is currently hospitalized and in stable condition.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the attack in a statement on social media, expressing condolences to Jha’s family and wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery. He assured that the sacrifice of the CRPF personnel would not be forgotten.
Gunfire was also reported in Mongbung on the night of July 13. In response to the recent violence, additional security forces have been dispatched to the area. The attack also resulted in damage to a security vehicle.
Since May of last year, Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, resulting in over 200 deaths.
