The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai following a red rain alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The BMC has urged schools to notify parents and take necessary precautions. The IMD’s red alert signifies a high likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai. In response, the BMC announced, “Considering the IMD’s Red Alert warning for Mumbai, a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges within the BMC area. We appeal to schools and teachers to inform parents and ensure proper coordination and necessary precautions at the school level.”
Several areas in Mumbai recorded significant rainfall between 4 am and 1 pm on Thursday. The Malpa Dongri area in Andheri received the highest rainfall at 157 mm, followed by Paspoli in Powai with 155 mm, and Dindoshi with 154 mm.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been monitoring the situation, especially in flood-affected areas. He informed PTI, “I have been continuously monitoring the situation. The Collector, two inspectors, and the NDRF are providing facilities to people in flood-affected areas, including food packets and drinking water. The Army is on standby to airlift people if necessary. The situation is now under control, and rescue operations are ongoing.”
The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and the nearby districts of Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, predicting heavy to very heavy rain in some areas and extremely heavy rain in isolated spots throughout the day, with the alert lasting until 8:30 am on Friday.
In the coastal Konkan region, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Ratnagiri district, indicating heavy to very heavy rain, and a yellow alert for Sindhudurg district for Thursday.
Overnight rainfall has disrupted public transport services, flights, and train operations, causing significant inconvenience for citizens across Maharashtra. Heavy rain has led to waterlogging in many low-lying areas in Mumbai and its suburbs.
