The Smart Cities Mission in India represents a pioneering approach to urban development. Since its launch in June 2015, the Mission has introduced numerous innovative strategies. These include competitive selection of 100 smart cities, involving stakeholders in project selection, establishing special purpose vehicles for implementation, and leveraging technology for enhanced urban governance. Additionally, the Mission has incorporated third-party evaluations by leading academic and professional institutions.
Each of the 100 selected cities has embarked on a diverse array of projects, many of which are groundbreaking initiatives being implemented for the first time. This has significantly enhanced their capabilities and experience, leading to substantial transformation at the city level. Collectively, these cities are undertaking over 8,000 multi-sectoral projects valued at approximately ₹1.6 lakh crore.
As of July 3rd, 2024, the 100 cities have completed 7,188 projects, which account for 90% of the total, amounting to ₹1,44,237 crore under the Mission. The remaining 830 projects, worth ₹19,926 crore, are nearing completion. Financially, the Mission was allocated ₹48,000 crore by the Government of India for these cities, of which ₹46,585 crore (97%) has been disbursed. Of the funds released, 93% have been utilized so far. Financial support under the Mission has been fully provided to 74 out of the 100 cities.
Recognizing the challenges faced by some states and city governments in completing the remaining 10% of projects, which are in advanced stages but delayed due to various on-ground factors, the Government of India has extended the Mission deadline until March 31, 2025. This extension is aimed at ensuring the successful completion of all ongoing projects without any additional financial burden beyond the existing approved allocation. It is expected that all ongoing projects will be finalized by March 31, 2025, contributing significantly to improving the quality of urban life.
