The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has announced the deployment of Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the Wayanad district, where massive landslides have claimed eight lives and left hundreds feared trapped. An additional NDRF team is on its way to the affected area.
The landslides struck the hilly regions near Meppadi in Wayanad early Tuesday, specifically in the Mundakai and Chooralmala areas, approximately 20 km from Kalpetta town. The rescue efforts are being hampered by continuous heavy rainfall.
Two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been dispatched to assist in the rescue operations, as per a Facebook update from the KSDMA. Additionally, the Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has confirmed that two Air Force helicopters will be joining the rescue mission.
MLA T Siddique reported that numerous tourists staying at resorts in the region are also believed to be stranded due to the landslides.
