Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed strong disapproval following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brief visit to Russia and his interaction with President Vladimir Putin.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s recent missile strike on Kyiv, which resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 37 people, including three children. The attack, targeting a children’s hospital, also caused extensive damage to nearly 100 buildings, including schools and maternity hospitals. Zelenskyy’s tweet featured poignant images of the bombed hospital and infants being rushed to ambulances.
This sharp reaction from Zelenskyy came after Prime Minister Modi met with President Putin in Moscow. Their meeting, captured in visuals, showed the leaders sharing tea on a terrace at Putin’s Novo-Ogaryovo residence and Modi being driven around in a golf cart.
Despite the tension, Prime Minister Modi has maintained communication with President Zelenskyy, having met him in Italy last month during the G7 summit. This was their first face-to-face meeting since the war began, following their initial encounter in May last year at the G7 summit in Japan. Modi’s conversation with Zelenskyy in October 2022 emphasized India’s stance that “no military solution” exists for the conflict and highlighted India’s readiness to support peace efforts.
Since the onset of the war, India has consistently advocated for resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, with Prime Minister Modi reiterating India’s willingness to contribute to any peace initiatives.
