Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the 96th Foundation and Technology Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research today in New Delhi.
During his address, Shri Chouhan emphasized that agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, and farmers are its soul. He underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to elevate India to a developed nation by 2047, highlighting agriculture and related sectors as pivotal in achieving this goal. Shri Chouhan stressed the need to focus on doubling farmers’ income and expanding agricultural diversification to enhance productivity in sectors such as animal husbandry, fisheries, wheat, pulses, and oilseeds.
Acknowledging ICAR’s role in agricultural innovation, Shri Chouhan called for a closer connection between scientific advancements and practical farming applications. He urged for increased collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the country to ensure that scientific research directly benefits farmers on the ground. Shri Chouhan also emphasized the importance of natural farming practices and enhancing indigenous breeds of livestock and poultry to meet future challenges, including climate change impacts.
Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh highlighted the significant contributions of livestock and fisheries sectors to India’s economy, aiming to increase India’s global ranking in milk exports under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He emphasized the need for research on technologies like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and classified semen to boost productivity and quality in livestock.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Ram Nath Thakur emphasized the importance of enhancing grain storage facilities and reducing dependence on toxic fertilizers, advocating for sustainable agricultural practices.
The event also saw Union Ministers and State Ministers participating in exhibitions showcasing new crop varieties and agricultural products, highlighting ICAR’s ongoing contributions to agricultural advancement and farmer welfare in India.
