A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal developed into a depression on Tuesday, moving towards Odisha and now located near Puri, Gopalpur, and Paradip. This system is expected to move northwest, crossing the Odisha coast near Puri as a depression on Saturday morning, and then continue west-northwest across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, weakening gradually.
In response, IMD issued a red alert for Telangana, central Maharashtra, coastal Goa, and Gujarat for Saturday, and an orange alert for Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kutch, and Saurashtra for the weekend.
Heavy rainfall, around 115-120 mm, is predicted for these regions over the next 24 hours. Additionally, moderate to heavy rain is expected in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and eastern Rajasthan over the next three days.
IMD has also issued a ‘signal 3’ warning for coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, and Kakinada, cautioning vessels about a potential cyclonic storm.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh experienced heavy rainfall on Friday, leading to school closures and flooding in several areas.
Meanwhile, light and isolated rain is forecasted for Delhi-NCR over the next three days, with temperatures around 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The capital can expect light rain on July 21 and 22.
From June 1 to July 19, the all-India rainfall recorded 324.4 mm, which is 98% of the normal for this period. At least 15 states and Union Territories have received normal or above-normal rainfall so far.
